1503. Butler, Peter: The Wit of Prince Philip

Published by Leslie Frewin, 1965

1st edition hardback, very good in a very good dust wrapper. HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Famous for his so-called "gaffes", Prince Philip is, quite simply, a national treasure: a man whose immense contribution to Britain (and the world) is not always fully appreciated. For nearly 60 years he has been not only at the Queen's side, but often several paces behind her! This cannot have been easy for a tough, no-nonsense ex-naval officer who distinguished himself in World War II. However, armed with a down-to-earth view on life and a magnificent sense of humour, he has carved out a unique role as Royal Consort. On Foreign Relations; on travel and adventure; on industry and science; on the Commonwealth; on medicine; on sport etc. Illustrated with black and white photographs and cartoons by Giles.

Armed only with sandwiches, cups of tea and a copy of the "Encyclopedia of Sexual Knowledge", these two half-informed inhabitants of Beacontree Avenue set the world to rights, meditating on subjects like sex, art, religion, the Renaissance and Dud's aunt Dolly.

1507. Drew, Simon: Handel's Warthog Music

Published by Antique Collectors' Club Ltd, 1996

Hardback reprint, fine book and dust wrapper. Signed by author. On this occasion he turns his attention to the subject of music and applies his very special talents to the many aspects of this topic in a totally unexpected and entertaining way. Once again the author delights in knocking convention off its pedestal or tilting at the commonplace with a clever and literal use of language linked to his superbly executed drawings. Everybody and everything is fair game in this musical pot-pourri, from the 'Bantam of the Opera' to 'Zadok: The Piste'.

1508. Drew, Simon: Nonsense in Flight

Published by Antique Collectors' Club Ltd, 1988

1509. Drew, Simon: Still Warthogs Run Deep: And Other Free Range Nonsense

Published by Antique Collectors' Club Ltd, 1988

Hardback 1st edition. Fine in a very good unclipped dust wrapper which has a small tear at the top of the spine. Simon Drew has compiled a series of poems, drawings and puns in this book that combine a sense of the ridiculous with a definite seriousness regarding our respect, or lack of it, for the countryside. He has always found that he has an irresistible urge to make fun of most things: this applies particularly to language which he sometimes twists in the same way that a crossword compiler does. However, as a keen observer of our environment, whether it is man-made or otherwise, it would have been hard for him to ignore the fact that humans have had a somewhat odd attitude to the animals and plants that we can (or could) find around us. To make his drawings Simon Drew has avoided the pitfalls of resorting to cartoons and makes the animals look like they really are, where possible! The result of this juxtaposition of quirky humour and semi-serious drawings is sometimes hilarious, sometimes provocative and sometimes just warped.

2286. Drew, Simon: Cat with Piano Tuna and other feline nonsense

Published by Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge. 2002

Hardback reprint. Signed by the author/artist on the title page otherwise both book and unclipped dust wrapper are fine. Whether they are strange, wicked, angelic or exotic these cats are always cats and never the little furry humans often depicted elsewhere. Why some of the cats do the things they do is anyone's guess, but in any case this book will intrigue, perplex and enlighten all at the same time. This is Simon Drew's fifth book and is the first to concentrate so strongly on one subject.

Hardback 1st edition. Fine book in like unclipped wrapper. Cream wood-grain effect boards with bronze gilt and brown cloth spine. Gary Larson writes: Our story begins with a family of worms who are having dinner one fine evening and Son Worm is unhappy. Unhappy because he's found a hair in his plate of dirt. It's the proverbial straw and it leads him to bemoan his fate as a worm - he's sick and tired of being a worm, tired of being at the bottom of the food chain. His father, upset by his outburst, decides to tell him the tale of a fair human maiden called Harriet. Even with the wonder of satellite television, Harriet loved the Great Outdoors and took many wondrous walks along her favourite woodland trail, adventures filled with mystery and magic. Unfortunately, although Harriet was fair and kind-hearted (to a very dangerous degree) she was also, well, dumb. She didn't quite understand what she was seeing, didn't realise that in Nature, what you see is not necessarily what you get ...
