497. Lord, James: Picasso & Dora:
A Memoir
Published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1993 Hardback edition. Book and jacket in fine condition. James Lord arrived in Paris as a soldier during world War II. Intoxicated by the glamour of the city, he presented himself at Picasso's doorstep and, amazingly, was invited inside. Then he had the temerity to ask Picasso to draw his portrait. The master complied, and Lord became a part of Picasso's circle, where he met Picasso's mistress and inspiration for his greatest paintings, the formidable beautiful painter Dora Maar. "Picasso" and Dora tells of Lord's turbulent relationship with both Picasso and this legendarily mysterious woman. With a bold instinct for psychological truth he movingly chronicles their relationship, which had all the interests of a love affair. |

467. Martin, Richard:
Fashion and Surrealism
Published by Thames & Hudson, London, 1996 Large format paperback reprint in fine condition. The love affair between fashion and Surrealism began in the Paris of the 1920s when Surrealist artists plundered fashion's imagery for their art, raising fashion beyond the level of mere style to an important expression of culture. This text reveals the extravagant and ingenious creations resulting from this collaboration. It ranges from the shocking Surrealist dresses of Schiaparelli and Dali, and photographic experiments with Surrealist techniques by Horst P. Horst, Cecil Beaton and George Hoyningen-Huene to the work of younger fashion designers, including Olivier Guillemin and Vivienne Westwood, who have all brought Surrealist imagery into clothing and accessories. |

Reid, Jamie: Up They Rise: The
Incomplete Works of Jamie Reid
Published by Faber & Faber , London. 1987. 1st edition softcover in very good condition without jacket as issued. Rear cover, top corner slightly creased and only very light wear at the edges otherwise very nearly fine. There are no previous owner names or marks. Original thin card pictorial wrappers, a clean tight copy of this scarce and important iconic publication. 144 pp, b/w illustrations by Jamie Reid throughout. The artist's Sex Pistols imagery came to symbolise the hopes and outrage of a generation. The most potent visible manifestation of disquiet during the 1977 Royal Jubilee celebrations was a photograph of the Queen - defaced by blackmail style lettering and a safety pin through the lip - reproduced on the posters, ads and sleeve for the Sex Pistols single "God Save The Queen". This book - only marginally more incomplete than the artist himself - embraces the whole range of his paintings, graphics, and drawings, from the "Cat Book" to "Learning The Twentieth Century", and from "Anarchy In The UK" to "Letter to Brezhnev". The accompanying text shows Reid as irreverent, vulnerable, witty and perceptive. |
