Of the three great partnerships between author and artist in English literature - Dickens and Phiz, Carroll and Tenniel, Milne and Shepard - probably the most interesting is that of Dickens and Phiz. It was in 1836 that Dickens personally called in Hablot Knight Browne, then only twenty-one, to illustrate Pickwick Papers. The partnership was to last nearly thirty years, during which Phiz would design 290 steel engravings and 157 woodcuts to illustrate the first editions of Dickens' books. Because Browne realised so faithfully in visual terms the author's own conception of his characters, he has clearly had an enormous influence on the millions who have read the novels: today, few of us can think of the works of Dickens without thinking also of the works of Phiz. But Browne had roles other than as a mirror to Dickens. To his contemporaries he was almost equally famous as illustrator of the rollicking novels of Charles Lever, whose books were graced by some 500 plates by Phiz, and of Le Fanu, Surtees, Frances Trollope and many others. In addition, Browne illustrated editions of Defoe, Swift, Fielding and Smollett, as well as children's books and ephemera. Away from the field of books, he produced many paintings in oil and water colour. In this book John Buchanan-Brown has collected over 200 of the finest...
