Genetics as applied to the natural world, principally to explain how
inherited variation helps to explain the properties of natural populations:
the differences between individuals, the extent and mechanism for
transmitting characteristics from one generation to another, and the factors
which control the frequency of a trait in a local group. Of interest not
only to naturalists but also to farmers, gardeners and indeed anyone, in the
context of modern social planning. In this new
edition the results of much scientific research over a quarter of a century
have been incorporated; distribution maps have been updated and the text has

Umbulala: The Jungle Book from the Heart of Africa,
Through the Eyes of a Leopard
Published by Questech Productions, 1993
Hardback Illustrated with colour plates and b/white line and pen
drawings. Nr fine book & wrapper. Umbulala is a story about the African
leopard and its relationship to the wild, its inhabitants and mores.
Pronounced "oom-b'lala" and lavishly illustrated throughout with line and
pen drawings and colour plates, it is the story of a black leopard -
predominantly referred to throughout as "panther" for succinctness. With a
strong zoological base, and drawn from the author's own knowledge and
experience of the bush, the story is told from the viewpoint of the panther
and Africa's wildlife. Umbulala, as hero, is an exceptional beast of prey -
the biggest and fiercest the breed may feasibly attain, and thus the stuff
of legend. |

1549. Bunn, D. S. with A. B. Warburton and
R. D. S. Wilson: The Barn Owl
Published by T & AD Poyser, 1992
1st reprint, hardback edition in fine condition. Complete in a very good
dust wrapper. There is a small stain at the bottom of the rear panel, the
book is not affected. In the classic monograph mould, this study of Tyto
Alba is the product of almost 40 years field work by its authors and
complementary observations by other dedicated ornithologists in Britain, the
USA and Europe. The result is a detailed, balanced account based on intimate
knowledge of the Barn Owl in varying habitats in Britain, comparing, as
appropriate, this race's behaviour with that of sub-species in other areas
of the world. There are major chapters on breeding and general behaviour,
feeding, distribution, etc, but voice is rightly given a full treatment. The
text is graced by Ian Willis's fine drawings and there are 31 photographs
plus a colour frontispiece. |

Gilmour, John & Max Walters: Wild Flowers: New
Naturalist 5
Published by Collins, 1962 Hardback 3rd edition. Both book and jacket are
in very good condition. One of the many agreeable qualities of Wild Flowers
is the way in which it retains the freshness and sense of wonder of the
beginner. Dr. Gilmour is the botanical editor of this series, and we are
fortunate that both he and Mr Walters, his able and learned colleague at
Cambridge, have not forgotten their first excitements, difficulties,
mistakes and triumphs. Indeed, the purpose of this book is to supply an
introduction to British wild flowers for those who (though keen and
interested) may feel in need of guidance. Readers will also find that Wild
Flowers succeeds in far more than this, since, with its accent on history,
ecology and the communities of plants, it makes a really important
contribution to the understanding of our flora, not only by the general
naturalist but by those working in other fields of natural history. The
writers also lay great stress on the part that amateurs can play in building
up the scientific knowledge of our plants. In addition, their account of the
history of British field botany is probably the best of its kind yet written
and there are numerous and apposite quotations from the poets, a surprising
number of whom also appear to have been botanists. |
