In the late 1980s a generation of filmmakers began to flower outside the Hollywood studio system and in the following decade, the independent film movement bloomed. Dozens of lesser-known filmmakers such as Steven Soderbergh and Quentin Tarantino began walking away with coveted prizes at Cannes and eventually the Academy Awards. Many of these directors were discovered at Robert Redford's Sundance Film Festival and then scooped up by Harvey and Bob Weinstein, whose company Miramax laid waste to the competition. In Down and Dirty Pictures, Peter Biskind tells the incredible story of these filmmakers, the growth of Sundance into the premier showcase of independent film, and the meteoric rise of the controversial Weinstein brothers who left a trail of carnage in their wake yet created an Oscar factory that is the envy of the studios.

The Big Sleep, The Godfather, Little Caesar, LA Confidential--behind these classic films there's a story waiting to be told, and pulp novels, bank robbers, and serial killers have all played a part in shaping crime cinema. But after Hollywood throws these elements into the blender--along with the demands of censors, backers, and the frequently rampant egos of stars and directors--the finished film often bears little resemblance to its source. Real crimes are often considered by filmmakers to be too brutal, and their perpetrators too unattractive. When Sam Peckinpah filmed The Getaway, for instance, the novel's pessimistic ending had to be changed to suit the tastes of its glittering stars--Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw. Packed with fascinating facts and anecdotes, Hardboiled Hollywood delves into the origins of the greatest crime films ever, placing them in the context of their times and the studio system that produced them.

1006. Sellers, Robert: The Battle for Bond: The Genesis of Cinema's Greatest Hero

Published by Tomahawk Press, Sheffield. 2007

1st edition paperback in fine condition, one of the few not destroyed by the Fleming Trust's solicitors. In 1963, Ian Fleming, the creator of the 20th century s greatest fictional character was in court, accused of plagiarism. The screen version of James Bond was not Fleming s creation. It was the creation of Jack Whittingham, who was employed by maverick producer Kevin McClory to adapt the character to the big screen. Had this screen character never been developed, James Bond might have been just another minor fictional spy character. The Battle for Bond is a tale of bitter recriminations, betrayal, multi-million dollar lawsuits and even death. It is the fabled story of Kevin McClory's 40 year legal battles over the rights to the screen version of James Bond, which he and Whittingham had created. The first edition of this book was banned by the Ian Fleming Will Trust. But the truth never dies!

687. Shaw, George Bernard: Three Plays

Published by Constable, 1934

Hardback 1st Standard Edition. Unclipped d/w is slightly browned and has some wear along the top edge otherwise very good+. Previous owner name & inscription to front end paper, otherwise fine. Top edges gilt. Red cloth boards with gilt titles, near fine. Contains "Too True To Be Good", "Village Wooing" And "On the Rocks" While some of Shaw's earlier plays are still performed, his later plays, such as the ones in this volume, are barely known. As the collective title indicates, the themes here are political; yet, frankly, it is doubtful how seriously we can now take Shaw as a political thinker. Despite writing in the 1930s, he has little to say of the nature of totalitarianism: although he satirises Fascist dictators in "Geneva", the satire is disappointingly mild. Neither did Shaw appear to foresee (on the evidence of these plays, at least) the imminent collapse of the British Empire. But it is Shaw the dramatist rather than Shaw the political philosopher who still holds our attention - even in plays as explicitly political as these. He had a sharp intellect and a quirky sense of humour, and his dialogue still glints and sparkles: he couldn't write a dull line if he tried. No matter how serious the themes he addresses, the crispness of his writing and his lightness of touch still scintillate. Shaw seems, perhaps unfairly, out of fashion nowadays. But even in these lesser-known works, he demonstrates his matchless ability, still undimmed, to provoke and to entertain.
