One very human figure symbolises the great post-war surge of steeplechasing: Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who entered Britain's special sport in 1949 by sharing - like many other beginners - an inexpensive chaser with her daughter. By October 1964 she had 18 horses in training, had reached her first century of winners, and finished the season with 27 winners (the highest in the land) and £13,000 won in stakes. By last season's end her 51 horses had won 160 races.
