The dust wrapper is not price clipped and is only very slightly chipped at the folds otherwise this too would be fine. Roald Dahl's classic story, illustrated with black and white line drawings in this edition by Quentin Blake. Matilda is brilliant. Sensitive and brilliant, but Mr and Mrs Wormwood treat her as a scab, not a daughter - a scab to be endured until the time comes to flick her away to the next county, or preferably farther. Even before she is five years old, Matilda has read Dickens and Hemingway, Kipling and Steinbeck, and still her parents think her just a nuisance. So she decides to get her own back. Matilda's car salesman father, in his loud checked suit, and her platinum-haired mother are no match for her sharp genius. And when she is attacked by Miss Trunchbull, the headmistress who could teach Wackford Squeers a thing or two about punishment, the child prodigy discovers she has an extraordinary psychic power that can save her school and especially her lovely teacher, Miss Honey.

2582. Dickens, Charles & Christian Birmingham: Oliver Twist

Published by Dial Books, New York. 1996

Light edge wear and one small tear at the top of the spine otherwise the dust wrapper too is very good and not clipped. The classic Victorian tale of the little orphan who dared to ask for 'more' retains its heart-warming charm and relevance in our era. Oliver's story is full of pathos and excitement, from abandonment in a workhouse to falling in with Fagin's gang in London's murky underworld and his eventual rescue by the kindly Mr Brownlow, who is able to reveal Oliver's true parentage. This splendid edition of Dickens' most popular novel, carefully adapted for children, is sure to entice a new generation of readers to explore his work.

2583. Dickens, Charles: A Christmas Carol

Keller. There is a previous owner's inscription at the front end paper inscriptions. The most popular of all ghost stories was first published on 17 December 1843, and by Christmas Eve 6, 000 copies had been sold at a published price of five shillings. The story of Scrooge, a miser who becomes a different man when he is presented with visions of past, present and future by Marley's ghost, was an immediate success and has remained so ever since. It is a book to read on Christmas Eve beside a blazing fire - and the best introduction to Dickens for young readers not quite ready for his longer novels.

2607. Doyle, Roddy: The Giggler Treatment

Published by Scholastic Press, London. 2000

Hardback, UK 1st edition, in fine condition. The dust wrapper is also fine being only slightly rubbed and not clipped. There are no previous owner names or inscriptions. Imagine a wonderfully rude, children's version of "It's a Wonderful Life." At the beginning of the tale we have a good man, a caring man, heading for his job as a cookie-taster…but also heading for a terrible fate (he's about to step in something smelly.) Is this an accident (no!) Who's responsible? (the Gigglers, that's who! Elfen creatures whose pranks punish wayward adults.) What did he do to deserve this (he yelled at his children unfairly, but actually this was a bit of a misunderstanding….) Can the impending mess be avoided (Possibly!). Working backward, Roddy Doyle spins the hilarious tale of Mr. Mack, his wife Billy Jean, his three children Robbie, Jimmy, and Kayla, their dog Rover (in many ways the STAR of the show) and, of course, the irrepressible, sometimes hasty, but well-meaning Gigglers. A thoroughly silly, occasionally subversive, periodically tender, completely satisfying read.

The clock is ticking for Sam Temple and the kids of Perdido Beach but it's not the big one-five that they face now; it's starvation that threatens the FAYZ. In an abandoned mine shaft a faceless animal lurks, pulling the strings, toying with human and mutant alike. And he's hungry - hungry in the darkness. An uneasy calm has settled over Perdido Beach. But soon, fear explodes into desperation as starvation sets in and the mob look to place blame. For the 'normals' the buck must stop somewhere: with the 'freaks'. More and more kids are developing strange powers and, just as frighteningly, so are the animals in the FAYZ: talking coyotes, swimming bats and deadly worms with razor-sharp teeth are just the beginning. For Sam Temple the strain of leadership is beginning to show and he's got more than just dwindling rations and in-fighting to worry about - Caine is back with the psychotic whiphand, Drake, by his side. And in the background lies the greatest danger of all - and he too needs to be fed.

Cut off from the outside world, those that are left are trapped, and there's no help on the way. They must do all they can to survive. Chaos rules the streets. Gangs begin to form. Sides are chosen - strong or weak, cruel or humane. And then there are those who begin to develop powers . . . It's Lord of the Flies for the Heroes generation.
